Open the Door and See the Mountain

Open the Door and See the Mountain (開門見山) takes its title from a Chinese idiom meaning “to speak directly or get straight to the point.” This video piece was filmed inside a car on Yangmingshan, with the open car door and its frame acting as a steadfast threshold. Outside, the scene rapidly flashes between different landscapes, a mountain, bursts of sunlight, glimpses of passing temples, while the frame remains unchanged.

Each time the door opens, it enacts the ritual of arriving or seeking clarity, yet the outside world is always different.

The work explores how arrival is inherently uncertain: every attempt to “see the mountain” finds only continual transformation, turning the present into something fleeting and elusive—like a memory always just beyond reach.
