A Car Ride

2025. Digital Photography

“A Car Ride” is an experimental photography series that ferrets out the three-way relationship between the passenger, the vehicle, and the outside environment at a single moment in time. The project began with a simple yet intriguing question: What if we stabilize only the camera, while the world around it remains in motion? Utilizing a suction mounting device, more commonly used for videography, I attached the camera to the vehicle, allowing it to remain still as it passed across the inorganic road. I, the subject, shifted organically, both involuntarily and voluntarily, within the setting.

Through careful selection of a slow shutter speed and other technical decisions regarding the apparatus, the resulting images captured a controlled paradox: the interior of the car, where I sat, remained clear and still, while the world outside blurred into indistinguishable motion. Within this staged stillness, any organic movement from myself was registered as ghostlike traces, forms distorted, alien, and at times almost unrecognizable. The car’s interior became both a cage and a cocoon, an in-between space, neither fully here nor there, symbolizing the liminality and transition within life’s moments.
