Derek

Derek was sitting beneath the dappled shade of a tree at Providence’s India Point Park, having just arrived and unpacked his belongings. He leaned against the trunk, holding a well-worn book on macrobiotics. When I approached him and asked about the title, he invited me to sit down.

He explained how he first discovered macrobiotics through a chance encounter with his spiritual master thirty-five years ago, an teacher whose photograph he now keeps alongside a snapshot of his son and a small image of Krishna on his lanyard, next to his driver’s license.
